N.B. Isaac van Amburgh, an American lion tamer of Dutch extraction, took London by storm in 1838-39 with his daring performances at venues such as the Drury Lane Theatre and Astley's Amphitheatre. Queen Victoria was a great fan. Van Amburgh favored entering the cities where he would perform with great fanfare, including his musical band in a blue carriage pulled by eight cream-colored horses, driven by van Amburgh himself. The procession followed with various beasts in cages and ended with an elephant.
