Alfred T. Ordway (American, 1819-1897)
Cows Beneath Trees. Signed and dated "A. Ordway/1886" l.l., with a label from Frost & Adams, Boston, and a partial label from Charles Harris Picture Frames, Boston, affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 28 x 42 in., framed. Condition: Lined, drying cracks.
Estimate $800-1,200
Areas of retouch to l.l. quadrant. Broadly brushed retouch or perhaps extra varnish in the green leaves of the trees. Fine craquelure.
Framed dimensions are 35-1/2 x 49 x 1-1/2 inches.
There is a fragmentary label on the stretcher from what might have been the Boston Art Club, where Ordway was a frequent exhibitor. In 1887, Ordway exhibited an oil painting titled "A Pasture in North Billerica" at the Boston Art Club, but it is not possible to confirm if this might be one and the same work.
