N.B. The consignor reports that this floral still life was purchased in 1936 from Lenygon & Morant, Ltd., London. In 1968 Ellis K. Waterhouse, then director of the Barber Institute of the University of Birmingham, England, noted that the work was "like Monnoyer" and ascribed a general date of 17th century.
Estimate $2,000-3,000

Framed dimensions are 36 x 42 3/4 in.

Modern retouch is minimal. The major area consists of a horizontal line at u.r. quadrant, of varying thickness and measuring 6 inches across overall, which follows a line where there may have been a restoration done at the time the painting was lined. The surface irregularity of this repair is visible in raking light. Dashes of retouch to the l.r. quadrant, consisting of about a dozen small dots and brushstrokes, the largest ones being brush strokes of 1-1/2 inches and 1 inch on the left side of the head of the cherub on the right. There is also a short, thin broken line of about 1-1/2 inches at the center left edge. Overall fine craquelure and surface dust.
