Medina, Pedro de (1493-1567) Nuevo Mundo. [from] Arte de Navegar, Valladolid: Francisco Fernandez de Cordova, 1545. Single leaf woodcut map, first state, single woodcut, sixteen rhumb lines, with text in two columns on verso from Libro Tercero, Chapter vii, Del concierto y orden de las cartas de marer, in the left column, and a woodcut diagram in the right, thumbing, edges somewhat chipped, 13 x 9 in.
Medina travelled with Cortes to the New World and collaborated with other cartographers to produce the eight-volume magnum opus from which this map was taken. The Papal Line of Demarcation bisects lands of North and South America vertically, granting everything west of the line to Spain, everything to the east to Portugal. Medina's is an important chart formulated and published during the earliest period of European colonial expansion to the Americas.
