Description:
Pettrich, Ferdinand (1798-1872) Portraits of Distinguished Indians from Several Tribes Who Visited Washington in 1837. Baltimore: Edward Weber & Co., 1842. Large folio, defective copy, lacking the title page, each page originally printed as a composite with a collection of varying numbers of portraits, in this copy the individual portraits have been cut apart and here re-assembled on album pages, consisting of approximately thirty images, lacking approximately four images supplied as photocopies, many lithographs highlighted with gold accents, all bound in modern boards with a facsimile of the original title page pasted on the front board and images of the whole pages mounted opposite each leaf, an unusual presentation, each of the six leaves measure 24 x 20 1/2 in.
Eames (IV) 2333: 'Only three copies are known [the very imperfect Eames copy among them]. The portraits are unusually well drawn; better than those of the more famous Indian portrait painters.' The Eames description of 1915 cites an earlier auction record of $265. A set in the New York Public Library is embellished with a printed title not always present. Bennett, p. 89: 'Rarissima.' The last copy offered for sale in the auction records was in 1951.
