Pear, Isaac (b. 1824) Autograph Letter Signed, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 13 February 1853. Blue laid paper large quarto format bifolium inscribed over four pages of approximately 1,000 words with interesting content; Pear wrote from aboard the Golden Eagle, which sailed from Boston and was a participant, along with ninety-four other clipper ships, in the Deep Sea Derby of 1852, an ocean race around the Horn for San Francisco; in this letter to his aunt, Pear mentions the heat, eating raw oysters from the shore, yellow fever, bed bugs, spending three days attending Carnival, "People were enjoying themselves in a very foolish manner. As we passed along the first thing would be a pail of water thrown onto you from an upper story, then would come a wax ball filled with water"; a detailed description of a visit to the botanical gardens, and more; old folds, some toning, interesting content, a full transcript available upon request, 9 3/4 x 7 3/4 in.
