James Abbott McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903)
La Mère Gérard, 1858, final state (Glasgow 24 ,Kennedy 11, iv/iv). Signed "Whistler" in the plate l.l., with a suggestion of a butterfly beneath the plate mark l.c. (partially obscured by the mat),inscribed "Imp. Delatre. Rue St. Jacques. 171." (the 't' in 'St' raised and the 'J' reversed) in the plate l.c. edge, identified on a fragmentary label from H. Wunderlich, New York, encapsulated on the frame backing paper. Etching on paper, 5 x 3 1/2 in., framed. Condition: Toning, not examined out of frame.
N.B. La Mère Gérard was published with the Douze eaux-fortes d'après Nature (the 'French Set') in Paris in November 1858.
