Portrait of the Clipper Ship Sancho Panza off Hong Kong
Unsigned, the artist identified on a label reading in part "Ye Chung Portrait Painter, No. 529 Queen's Road."
Oil on canvas, 30 x 38 in., in the original black-painted and carved frame.
Condition: Relined, inpainting mostly to sky, and to a repaired tear u.r.

Provenance: The collection of Henry Cabot Lodge, who served in the Senate, as an ambassador to South Vietnam, and as Richard Nixon's running mate in the 1960 Presidential election; by descent to the present owners.

Note: The Sancho Panza was an 876-ton medium clipper ship built in Medford, Massachusetts, by Samuel Lapham. It was owned by John E. Lodge and Company. The painting is accompanied by a half-hull model of the ship and a handwritten note to Mr. John Lodge discussing the cotton trade in 1833.
