Rare First Phase Wax Relief Miniature of Gaspard Monge, France, Jacques-Edouard Gatteaux, c. 1820, the painted relief bust of a man facing to the left on a flat disk, signed "E GATTEAUX" below the bust, on a leather background and black-painted molded frame, miniature dia. 1 1/2 in.
Provenance: Never Bird Antiques, 2015.
Note: The medal that this miniature was apparently the model for commemorated Gaspard Monge, Comte de Peluse (1746-1818),a French mathematician who invented descriptive and differential geometry. He was elected to the Academy of Sciences in 1780. The medal was struck in Paris in 1822.
