American-made Officer's Spontoon

Description:

American-made Officer's Spontoon, c. third quarter 18th century, hand-forged blade, crossbar, and socket, with an old accession number "D-13" painted on the blade, attached to the haft with a rose-head nail, cherry haft with a turned base, blade and socket lg. 16 1/4, overall lg. 85 in.

Provenance: Rodney Hilton Brown Collection; The War Museum.

Note: This was acquired 40 or so years ago west of Boston in the Lexington-Concord area. Similar, if not identical, specimens are shown as Plates number 63 and 64 in AMERICAN POLEARMS (1967) by Rodney Hilton Brown, and Plates PA 68, 69, and 109 in SWORDS & BLADES OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION (1973) by George Neumann. Similar examples are found in the Valley Forge Museum and the Fort Ticonderoga Museum.

In overall very good condition with no repairs or breaks on the haft.
