Yoko Zeltserman-Miyaji Lotus Table, Boston, Massachusetts, c. 2005, white oak, urushi (Japanese lacquer), black urushi powder, pigmented cashew, roiro urushi, gold leaf, ht. 10, wd. 18 1/2, dp. 15 in.

Note: "For over thirty years, Yoko Zeltserman-Miyaji has masterfully worked with urushi and wood. Her furniture is fabricated and formed without screws and nails, using the ancient tradition of mortis and tenon joinery. Miyagi became a pioneer, the first female Japanese artist combining historical techniques and materials to create furniture reflecting the contemporary American Studio Furniture movement. Miyagi's rich cultural heritage is reflected in her traditional practices and techniques. Inlaid eggshell is used for decoration, linen on wood for strength, and Japanese brushes made from women's hair for painting." --Libby and Jo Anne Cooper, Mobilia Gallery, Boston, Massachusetts

Yoko's work has been exhibited at the Museum of Art and Design, New York City, Peabody-Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts, LACMA, Los Angeles, California, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is in numerous private collections throughout the United States.
