Kimbel & Cabus "Modern Gothic" Ebonized Wood and Marquetry Sofa and Two Side Chairs, New York, c. 1870, sofa with straight crest, turned supports and central inlaid panel, armrests ending in carved lion's heads, sides with turned supports and inlaid panels, legs and other areas incised and picked out in gilt, casters; chairs with padded backs and turned supports, stiles, rails, and legs incised and picked out in gilt, casters on front legs, ht. 33 1/2, seat ht. 17 1/2, wd. 62, dp. 20 in.
Note: In the firm's brief existence from 1862 to 1882, it produced major examples of Neo-gothic and Aesthetic Movement furniture which won particular acclaim at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia.
Minor areas of lifting marquetry, area of lost marquetry in central back panel, minor surface wear especially to backs of chair stiles. Replaced upholstery.
