56th Massachusetts Infantry Medal Identified to Captain James W. Cartwright, c. 1864-65, red-enameled silver 9th corps badge, engraved on the back "Capt. J.W. Cartwright/Wilderness May 6/1st Spottsylvania May 12th/2nd," "18th/North Anna River," "24th/Cold Arbor [sic]," "30th/Siege of Petersburg," with a hanging red, white, and blue ribbon with a "1" affixed, and a hanging minie ball with "56" engraved on the front and "C. Co./1st Brigade 1st Div/9th Corps" engraved on the back, overall ht. 3 3/8 in.
Note: James Cartwright enlisted in Boston on July 8th, 1862, and was mustered out of service on July 12th, 1865.
Pin on the back is broken but the medal is in overall very good condition.
