Tiger Maple Slant-lid Desk, southeastern New England, third quarter 18th century, the lid opens to an interior of pigeonholes and drawers, above a case of four thumb-molded graduated drawers on cutout bracket feet, ht. 42 3/4, wd. 37 1/2, dp. 20 in.

Provenance: Reportedly descended in the family of Dr. Owen Battey or Nathaniel Olmstead of South Scituate, Rhode Island, according to a modern note found in the desk. Purchased from Bill Burdick, 1976.

repairs to cracks on two front feet (brackets reglued but not replaced). lid broken out with repaired damage and replaced hinges. evidence of old wooden pulls to lid and drawerfronts. thumbmolding damage to drawers and lid, most worn very smooth. lid has shrunk and falls slightly into case, making it hard to open with fingers.
