Carolina Spring
Signed "H. GASSER" l.r.
Oil on Masonite, 20 5/8 x 26 3/4 in. (52.5 x 67.7 cm),framed.
Condition: Some areas of natural pigment fluorescence, retouch to l.r. corner, minor surface imperfections and varnish inconsistencies.
Estimate $15,000-25,000
Provenance: Purchased from the artist by a private collector in southern New Jersey; to the current private New Jersey collection.
The suggested location of this work is based on a very similar watercolor titled "Carolina Spring."
Area of retouch to the roof of the shed in the l.r. corner measuring 3 inches high and with feathery horizontal strokes measuring 1 inch across that the widest point. Paint fluorescence of the darkest grey pigment along the ridge line of the roof of the house in the u.l., with one similar spot of pigment in the middle of the roof. It is not absolutely clear if this is old retouch or was the hand of the artist. Similar fluorescence appears in some of the shadows under the porch of the house on the center right and in the skirt of the bending figure in the center.
Varnish inconsistencies with the appearance of small spots scattered mainly in the l.r. corner. Scattered surface accretions, although the overall surface does not seem dirty.
