N.B. Russell Smith was a noted landscape painter who portrayed not only dramatic vistas but also smaller, more intimate landscapes. The artist also worked as a scientific draftsman for geological surveys in Pennsylvania and Virginia. In this small landscape we find his interest in the towering cliffs combined with a more intimate scene of boaters gathered on the shore of a river.
