Second (Nouvelle) edition, octavo, with manuscript inscription on ffep, "Monsieur Cheselden, Chirurgien de la societe Royale de Londres, M. de Voltaire," illustrated with two portraits and six full page plates and one folding plate; bound in full contemporary tan calf, gilt-ruled boards, spine tooled in gilt compartments with red label, inner gilt dentelles, all edges gilt and marbled (chipped and head and tail with loss of both endcaps, front joint starting),large margins, contents clean, 7 3/4 x 4 3/4 in.
Cheselden, a renowned anatomist and surgeon, attended Newton in his final illness. This copy was purchased from Dawson's Rare Books, London, in 1980.
