Coburn, Alvin Langdon (1882-1966) Men of Mark, First Edition, Signed by Coburn. London: [printed at the Ballantyne Press in London] Dockworth & Co.; New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1913. First edition, large quarto, signed and inscribed on ffep by Coburn to Dr. Malcolm Campbell in 1944, in publisher's cloth, including text and thirty-three photogravures from photographic portraits taken by Coburn of contemporary luminaries, each mounted on a sheet with a facsimile of the sitter's signature, including Bernard Shaw, G.K. Chesterton, H.G. Wells, Henry James, Auguste Rodin, H.G. Wells, John S. Sargent, Theodore Roosevelt, Max Beerbohm, W.B. Yeats, Mark Twain, J.M. Barrie, Max Weber, Henri Matisse, and others; corners bumped, pastedowns toned, 12 x 9 in.
"To make satisfactory photographs of persons it is necessary for me to like them, to admire them, or at least to be interested in them. It is rather curious and difficult to exactly explain, but if I dislike my subject it is sure to come out in the resulting portrait."
