Jane Stuart (Rhode Island/Massachusetts, 1812-1888)
Portrait of George Washington After Gilbert Stuart
Inscribed on the back of the canvas "Copy of Stuart's Head of Washington/by his Daughter/Jane Stewart/Boston" in black ink superimposed over the same earlier inscription in chalk.
Oil on canvas, 30 x 25 in., in the original molded gilt-gesso frame with oval mat and scrolling gesso spandrels.
Condition: No evidence of damage or retouch to canvas, frame with minor gesso losses at edges and corners.
Provenance: Descended through the Lyman family. Notes adhered to the back of the frame indicate that the portrait was given by Jane Stuart to Florence Lyman about 1860, then given to Richard Warren Lyman in 1942 by his father Charles Frederic Lyman.
