Description:

Oak Cannon-form Ballot Box, America, late 19th century, in the shape of a mortar on a bed with handle in the back, the back with single drawer, the muzzle of the mortar has an opening for dropping a marble which strikes a bell as it enters the drawer, marked on one side "TO/F.B. SPEAKMAN,/Col. 133D P.V.," the other side marked "Wm SLACK/Co. A. 133D P.V.," ht. 8 1/4, wd. 5 3/4, lg. 15 1/2 in.

Note: Colonel Franklin Bailey Speakman (1833-1900) mustered as Captain in Company G of the 133rd Infantry on August 16 and was quickly promoted to Colonel on August 21, 1862. He served in the assault on Marye's Heights at Fredericksburg in December 1862 and Chancellorsville in May 1863. After the war Speakman operated a hotel in Coatseville, Pennsylvania, through to the end of his life.
