Description:

Rare Quatrefoil Design Shaker Covered Basket, Harriet Goodwin, Alfred, Maine, c. 1880-1900, the finely woven basket with intricate quatrefoil pattern on the shallow lid stitched to the body in the back, the closure consisting of an orange silk ribbon and porcelain button, the body with gently curving sides and quatrefoil decorated base, the delicately splint-wound handle attached to the body by orange silk ribbons on each side, body ht. 4 3/4, dia. 8 in.

Provenance: Acquired by the consignor in Maine.

Literature: The book Shaker Baskets includes, on p. 124, an image of an elder sister carrying a very similar basket, on the last day leaving Mount Lebanon.


Note: While most twilled baskets are associated with Cornelia French (1840-1917) in New Lebanon, New York, New Lebanon, Eldress, Harriet Goodwin (1823-1903),is also documented as a basket maker skilled in twilling and was sent to live in Alfred, Maine, in 1878 (see June Sprigg, Shaker Design, (Whitney Museum of American Art: New York, 1986),pp. 122-123.
