Description:

James Thomas Breen (American, 1859-1940) With or After Alfred Arthur Brunel de Neuville (French, 1852-1941)

Kittens with a Ball of Yarn. Signed "J.T. Breen" l.r., with a faint signature, possibly "Brunel Neuville" l.l. Oil on canvas, 21 1/8 x 25 1/4 in., framed. Condition: Small puncture l.l. corner, craquelure, stretcher bar marks, varnish discoloration, surface grime.

Provenance: Skinner, Inc., American & European Works of Art, May 8, 1998, Sale 1843, Lot 102.

N.B. J.T. Breen and Brunel de Neuville were contemporaries, and Breen was known to have studied in France. According to Breen's biography on AskArt, the artist enjoyed making copies of paintings, and was often commissioned to do so. This painting seems to bear the signatures of both artists, and the story behind the creation of the painting is not known.
