Leonard Baskin (American, 1922-2000)
The Arrival
Incised date and signature "19 BASKIN 80" on the base.
White metal or similar with dark brown patina, 25 x 15 x 13 3/4 in. (63.5 x 38.1 x 34.9 cm).
Condition: Dust and dirt to the interstices.
N.B. We would like to thank the Estate of Leonard Baskin and Galerie St. Etienne for their kind assistance with cataloging this work.
Estimate $2,000-3,000
The sculpture is quite dirty, and it is possible that it was outside. The patina is worn and in places appears to be brushed on. Spots on the base may be copper corrosion and could be removed, but the spots might need toning after removal.
Estate of Leonard Baskin and Galerie St. Etienne have confirmed that this sculpture was cast at the Bedi-Makky foundry, and that there is another sculpture that the foundry cast for Baskin in bronze and silver. While they have no knowledge of The Arrival being cast in anything other than bronze, they do not discount that this may be possible. They also noted that the foundry did not always stamp its work, and there were occasional unnumbered casts of Baskin's work.
