Gathering Flowers, alternatively titled Girl in a Rose Garden
Signed "CHAS·C·CURRAN·" l.r., titled and dated "...circa 1898" on a brochure from Apollo-Pierce Galleries, Palm Beach (see below),alternate title on an unattributed gummed label affixed to the stretcher.
Oil on canvas, 18 x 22 in. (46.0 x 56.0 cm),framed.
Condition: Lined, scattered retouch, fine craquelure, minor surface grime.

Provenance: The estate of Richard Mellon Scaife, Pennsylvania. The proceeds from the sale of this lot will benefit a Pennsylvania art institution.

N.B. The lot is accompanied by a small, undated brochure, Fine American Paintings, from Apollo-Pierce Galleries, which illustrates this work.

Frame dimensions are 26 x 29 3/4 in. New reproduction gold leaf frame from Guido Frame Studio, Boston.

Label from Apollo-Pierce Galleries, Palm Beach, and Pierce Galleries, Inc., Hingham, MA, affixed to the frame backing board. A label from Hayes Storage, Inc., New York, is affixed to the stretcher.

The gummed label on the stretcher is inscribed in ink as follows: " 1569P/Girl in Rose Garden/by/Curran/WIX xx"

Craquelure is stable, more noticeable in the sky. Minor paint loss (1/8 inch) in u.l. corner, probably from frame abrasion. Retouch as follows: thin diagonal line measuring 6 inches overall, slanting down from the center to the lower right through the lower skirt of the woman and ending near the end of her shadow; a horizontal area in lower right corner measuring 1/4 inch high at the maximum and 2 inches across; scattered dots and dashes of retouch to sky and grass in lower right; some natural fluorescence to the dark brown and dark green pigment.
