Signed, inscribed, and dated "J. LINTON CHAPMAN/ROMA 1873" l.l., titled, inscribed, and dated "CLAUDIAN·AQUEDUCT/for HENRY·DAY·ESQ N·Y·/by J·LINTON·CHAPMAN·ROMA·1873" on the reverse.

Condition: Lined, scattered minor retouch, fine craquelure.
Provenance: A Virginia collection.

Frame with a label from Thomas A. Wilmurt, New York, measuring 34 1/4 x 48 1/4 in. The painting is lined (adhered wih glue or resin),but a photocopy of the original inscription is tucked into the stretcher, and the inscription has been reproduced on the lining in a later hand.
There are several dots and small areas of retouch (the largest of which is about the size of a quarter. The craquelure is stable.
