Chavin Stirrup Effigy Vessel, c. 700-400 BC, with a complex mythological scene of a double-headed serpent transforming into a jaguar entwined in a mountainous region, the reptile with upturned nose, tongue extended and coiled body highlighted with incised designs, a tapering San Pedro cactus projects outwards, in brownware with incised decoration, ht. 12 1/2 in.
Provenance: Private collection, Columbus, Ohio; purchased from Fine Arts of Ancient Lands, New York, 1993.
