Description:

Jean Claude Severe (Haitian, 20th Century)

18th Century Haitian Soldiers on Horseback
. Signed "Jn Claude/Sévère" l.l., inscribed "R. 592 P.A.C. 83" on the reverse. Oil on Masonite, 24 3/8 x 32 in., framed. Condition: Minor scuffs, natural pigment fluorescence in the white pigment under the artist's signature.

N.B. Because this work is not inscribed, the identity of the elegantly uniformed soldiers is not documented, but the artist is known to have painted depictions of François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture (1743-1803),a hero of the Haitian rebellion in the late 18th century. Having been declared Governor for Life, Louverture was eventually captured by the forces of Napoleon Bonaparte, forced to resign, and was deported to France where he later died. His successor was Jean-Jacques Dessalines who became the first ruler of independent Haiti in 1805.
