Description:

Painted and Stencil-decorated Soap Hollow Cupboard, attributed to Jeremiah Stahl, Soap Hollow, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, dated 1873, in two sections, the upper section with molded cornice above two six-light doors and central three-light window, all flanked by quarter-columns, set into the lower section with work surface above three short drawers, the right one dated "1873" and inscribed "1873/LW" on the underside, above two cupboard doors and a central panel, on side and central bracket feet joined by a slightly shaped skirt, original painted and gilt stencil decoration of overall red with black trim details and yellow pinstriping, (paint wear),ht. 85 1/2, lower case wd. 64, lower case dp. 19 1/4 in.

Note: The basket of melons stenciling on the lower doors is commonly seen on Stahl's work. The "LW" initials may refer to Lucinda Weaver (1852-1925) of Davidsville, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. She was born to David A. Weaver (1826-1871) and Veronica "Fannie" Wingard (1824-1901). Lucinda was married to Sem K. Johns (1851-1937) in 1873.
