Description:

Carved Mahogany Scroll-top Desk Bookcase, Providence, Rhode Island, c. 1785, the top section with crest featuring floral scroll terminals, a shaped boss on the central plinth, and raised shaped panels, above cupboard doors with tombstone panels opening to adjustable shelves, set into the lower section with thumb-molded lid opening to a valanced interior centering a fan-carved drawer, and case of four thumb molded graduated drawers and ogee bracket feet, brasses appear original, old refinish, the upper backboards inscribed "Moses Ives" in chalk, ht. 94, wd. 40 3/4, dp. 24 3/4 in.

Provenance: Moses Brown Ives (1794-1857) married Ann Allen Dorr of Providence, Rhode Island, in whose family this piece has descended.

lacks left and right finials, felt writing surface is modern, backboards in upper section loose. base original but with repairs and some new blocking. interior of upper section, interior drawers, and long drawers in lower section with reddish-brown lacquered insides. The surface could likely be improved and made to look more uniform. old casters are off the feet but present.
