Captured Confederate Model 1854 Austrian Lorenz Rifle, c. 1861, .54 caliber, beech stock, left side of the butt has an old collection number of "26," painted on the right side of the butt "CAPTURED AT PORT HUDSON LA./JUNE 13, 1863/PRESENTED TO HON. ELIAS ROOT/BY THE OFFICERS AND MEN OF/110 N.Y.V. Co I," left side has no side plate and the mortise was filled with a piece of walnut, brass butt plate, lock marked "860," barrel has been shortened and utilizes a Springfield nose cap and barrel bands, barrel lg. 30, overall lg. 44 1/2 in.

Note: Elias Root was a politician from Oswego, New York, where the 110th New York Volunteer Infantry was enlisted.

Stock has a few dings and nicks, as well as period-replaced wood in spring locations and the sideplate, gun was shortened during the period to 30 inches, with a Springfield nose cap and barrel bands, and the lock functions properly.
