Description:

American Indian Blanket Gun Made from a French 1766 Musket, c. 1766, .70 caliber, walnut stock with "27 REGT" branded next to the trigger guard below the lock, lock marked "Maubeuge/Manuf R," breech has a small "V" mark near the breech as do some of the other parts of the gun, with a piece of animal hide shrunk to the front of the gun, barrel lg. 12, overall lg. 27 1/2 in.

Note: The 27th Regiment marking could be the 27th Continental Regiment although it also could be an 1812-era brand. This gun is published in The Gun Report in an article titled "The Alteration of American Indian Firearms," as well as Muskets of the American Revolution, by Bill Ahearn, pp. 189-91.
