Description:
John Elwell Carved Powder Horn, c. 1777, horn inscribed "John Elwell November 6 1777" and decorated with lines of arches and geometric patterns, depictions of fish, birds, and a ship, base plug with carved circle pattern, lg. 15 1/4 in.
Provenance: Found in the Bolton, Massachusetts, area. The Bill Ahearn collection.
Note: Bill's research documented a private John Elwell who enlisted March 20, 1777, at the age of 16, in Captain Daniel Lane's Company of Colonel Ichabod Alden's 7th Massachusetts Regiment. He was heavy action at Saratoga under Larned's Brigade in 1777, and fought in the Indian campaigns of 1778 and 1779. He was discharged at West Point on March 20, 1780.
