Description:
After Titian (Italian, c. 1485-1576)
Allegory of Married Life
Unsigned.
Oil on canvas, 48 x 42 in. (121.9 x 106.7 cm),framed.
Condition: Lined, retouch, fine craquelure.
N.B. This painting is thought to be a 19th-century copy after Titian's c. 1530 allegorical painting in the collection of the Louvre. The copy is very close in size to Titian's original composition. The bride and groom, depicted here as Mars and Venus accompanied by Cupid and other allegorical figures, may have commissioned Titian's painting. The bride holds a crystal ball as if to peer into the future.
