Lewis Michael Surveyor's Compass, Somerset, Pennsylvania, early 19th century, lacquered brass instrument with 6 1/2-in. dia. engraved silver dial marked "Made By Lewis Michael/Somerset, PA.," eight-point rose with fleur-de-lis representing north, blued-steel needle with lock-down arm, internal bubble level, outkeeper rotating dial marked 1-16, lg. 14 1/2 in.
Note: Lewis Michael apprenticed with Benjamin Rittenhouse in 1779 at an early age.
