Rheims Campaign de France 1814
Signed "Jan V. Chelminski" l.r., titled on a presentation plaque, canvas stencil from F. Dupré, Paris, on the reverse.
Oil on canvas, 15 1/2 x 27 in. (39.0 x 68.5 cm), framed.
Condition: Craquelure, drying cracks, surface grime.
Provenance: Estate of Robert W. Martin (d. 1961), by gift to the current owners from Marie E. Martin, Leonard A. Martin and Eleanor Martin, MD, children of Robert W. Martin.
Marked "19" and "#19" in black crayon on the stretcher and "C.R." in white chalk on the stretcher.
Small paint loss measuring 1/4 x 1/8 inch to u.l. corner which fluoresces under UV light. Some fluorescence also to the large drying cracks on the horses. Craquelure is pronounced but seems stable. The painting would benefit from cleaning. No additional condition issues to report.
