Paint-decorated Dower Chest for Jacob Desch, eastern Pennsylvania, c. 1785, top with applied molded edge opens above a dovetail-constructed box with till, above three thumb-molded short drawers and bracket base with center foot, painted blue with salmon-painted moldings, designs of trefoils in white surrounded by tulip blossoms and inscribed along the top of the front panel "17 JACOB DESCH 85," ht. 28, wd. 51 1/2, dp. 23 1/2 in.
Note: A Jacob "Desh" is listed on a roll of "Associators and Militia" in Northampton, Country, Pennsylvania, 1780-1783 (Thomas Lynch Montgomery, editor, Pennsylvania Archives, Fifth Series, Vol. VIII [Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, 1908]).
shrinkage crack in top looks as if it used to be covered with cloth attached with adhesive. top rather worn. one bail missing.
