Pressed Burl "CRANOLOGIE DE DOCTEUR GALL" Snuff Box, early 19th century, the friction-fit lid embellished with relief-carved numbered skulls and inscribed, the bottom inscribed with a list of twenty-seven items in French, dia. 3 in.
Note: Doctor Gall (d. 1828) is considered the father of phrenology, "the detailed study of the shape and size of the cranium as a supposed indication of character and mental abilities."
The two halves are slightly warped. But the friction fit holds tightly, and there do not appear to be cracks or chips (though there is minor edge imperfection due to the grain).
