Signed "greene" l.r., signed or inscribed "Stephen Greene" on the stretcher, numbered "9:56" and stamped "CITY ART MUSEUM/ST. LOUIS, MO" on the reverse, title provided by the consignor.
Oil on canvas, 29 3/4 x 25 in. (75.5 x 63.2 cm),framed.
Condition: Craquelure, small area of retouch l.r., surface grime.

Provenance: Property of the Saint Louis Art Museum, sold to benefit the acquisition fund.

The St. Louis Art Museum notes that the painting was purchased by the donor, Sydney Shoenberg, from Durlacher Brothers, New York City. Although they do not have documentation for his purchase date, Shoenberg was listed as owner of the painting in a 1947 exhibition of the work at Carroll-Knight Gallery in St. Louis. (The painting was titled, in that exhibition, "The Raising of Lazarus.") Greene's connection to St. Louis was established when he taught at Washington University in 1946-47. Also, in a 1968 Archives of American Art interview, Greene mentions his paintings at the St. Louis Art Museum being from 1947.

Small area of retouch in the shape of a 1/2 circle of 1/2 inch diameter located in the side of the hand of the figure in the lower right. Craquelure is stable and is not disruptive.

Framed dimensions are 38 5/8 x 33 1/2 inches.
