Description:
Continental School, 20th Century
Lady in Blue
Unsigned.
Oil on cardboard laid down on panel, 11 x 9 1/2 in. (28.0 x 24.4 cm),framed.
Condition: Craquelure, scattered tears and small paint losses.
Provenance: A Massachusetts estate.
Estimate $800-1,200
Framed dimensions: 21 1/2 x 20 in.
There are several surface breaks to the cardboard, including an oval area measuring 1 inch in the figure's right arm and a vertical area measuring 1-1/2 inches at the center bottom edge in the sitter's skirt, and scattered abrasions and minute losses overall. Under uv there is some pigment fluorescence, but it seems to be naturally occuring from certain of the original pigments used, rather than retouch.
