Description:

Frederick John Mulhaupt (American, 1871-1938)

Harbor View at Sunset
Signed "Mulhaupt" l.l.
Oil on canvas, 18 x 24 in. (45.5 x 61.2 cm),framed.
Condition: Paint loss l.r., craquelure with subtle areas of lifting, subtle canvas deformation, retouch.
Estimate $8,000-12,000

Framed dimensions are 23 1/2 x 29 1/2 in.

There are two information sheets about the artist affixed directly to the canvas on the reverse.

Areas of retouch are within the water, primarily to lower right quadrant, roughly corresponding to areas stabilized on the reverse. The lower center area is crescent shaped, applied in two sections, with areas of retouch measuring 8 1/2 wide overall and 1 1/2 inches high at the maximum. This may be a restoration of an old tear, stabilized with some kind of adhesive rather than a patch on the reverse. A third area of retouch is in the l.r. corner and measures 5 inches across and 3/4 inch high.

Paint loss of 3/16 inch diameter in the hull of the ship at the right, with some lifting around the edges of the loss.

Area of craquelure with lifting to l.c. in the water, measuring 4 x 1 3/4 inches overall. This may be aggravated by the adhesive used to attach the information sheets to the reverse.
