Unsigned, identified on labels from The R.W. Norton Art Gallery, Shreveport, Louisiana, and The Saint Louis Art Museum affixed to the frame backing board.
Oil on canvas, 29 5/8 x 46 1/2 in. (75.5 x 118.0 cm),framed.
Condition: Lined, retouch, areas of skinning, craquelure, minor surface grime.
Provenance: Property of the Saint Louis Art Museum, sold to benefit the acquisition fund.
N.B. The location of the scene has been identified as York Beach.

Significant broadly-brushed retouch throughout the sky, particularly in the gray clouds. Retouch also l.c. in the foreground, to the edge of the foreground rock, and to the l.r. corner.
The St. Louis Art Museum label states that the work was a gift from Miss Louisa Leete and Miss Clara Leete. A photostat in the Museum files shows that, prior to lining, the painting had a handwritten inscription "York Beach, Coast of Maine/JRM 1871" on the reverse.
Stamped "CITY ART MUSEUM/ST. LOUIS. MO." on the back of the frame.
Stretched onto a new conservation stretcher.
Frame measures 37 3/8 x 54 1/8 in., and bears a label from McCaughen & Burr, St. Louis, on the back.
