Taken by a Camera Aboard the Robotic Viking 1 Spacecraft
The first color photograph taken on the surface of Mars, the Red Planet, Viking 1, July 21, 1976. NASA HQ caption numbered 'Viking 1-54' on the verso. Vintage chromogenic print on resin-coated Kodak paper with a 'This paper manufactured by Kodak' watermark on the verso, image size 7 1/2 x 8 1/4 in. (18.3 x 20.8 cm),unmatted.
Condition: Subtle white mark in l.l. corner.

N.B. Launched on August 20, 1975, Viking 1 became the first unmanned spacecraft to land successfully on Mars eleven months later on July 20, 1976. "Apollo had a reason. It taught us how to go into space and set up our first outpost. Now we go set it up. Now we go to Mars," said Apollo 15 astronaut David Scott (quoted in Chaikin, Voices, p. 192).
