N.B. The twenty-four Apollo astronauts from Apollo 8 in December 1968 to Apollo 17 in December 1972 were the only men in history to see the Earth as a sphere hanging in space. "To stand back and look at the entirety of North America is not something you can take for granted. Yet, here's a picture to show you that it was done. It wasn't taken by a black box or a camera we sent out in a satellite into space. It was done by this guy right here who thinks and acts, puts on his pants one leg at a time just like you. How did it feel for that guy to be there, to take the picture? That's another thing. The pictures alone don't do the whole job--they don't properly record the emotional or the spiritual part of the history that took place--but they sure do carry their share of the load,' said Apollo 17 Commander Eugene Cernan (Schick and Van Haaften, p. 60). The NASA negative number is AS16-118-18880.

Literature: Light, plate 117; Chaikin, Voices, p. 170.
