Description:

William Anders (American, b. 1933),Frank Borman (American, b. 1928),or James Lovell (American, b. 1928)
Crater Tsiolkovsky, the most prominent feature of the lunar farside, Apollo 8, December 1968. Vintage chromogenic print on fiber-based Kodak paper with 'A Kodak Paper' watermark on the verso, image size 7 5/8 x 7 1/2 in. (19.2 x 18.9 cm),unmatted.
Condition: Good.

N.B. Tsiolkovsky, approximately 94 miles in diameter, was first discovered by the Soviet Moon probe Lunik 3 in 1959. The contrast between the peak (bottom left of image) and the surrounding crater floor is especially striking. 'We flew to the Moon as pathfinders for future Apollo missions. The first view of the Moon was mesmerizing,' remembered Frank Borman, 'as we were aware that no other humans had seen the far side of the moon directly' (Jacobs, p. 34). The NASA negative number is AS8-14-2447.
Estimate $400-600
