N.B. After orbiting the Earth twice, Apollo 8 fired the Saturn V third stage and broke free of Earth's gravitational pull on a trajectory for the Moon. One of the last views, showing the southeastern United States, the Caribbean Sea, and in particular the Bahamas (top of picture),taken from the Apollo 8 spacecraft before it left Earth orbit for the first time in history. "The other thing...was that this particular spot, the Bahamas lowland, was a turquoise jewel that you could see all the way to the Moon...,' observed William Anders. 'It was like it was illuminated, like a piece of opal. And you could see that all the way. And I kept being amazed about that" (Chaikin, Voices, p. 26).
