Alfred Gwynne Morang (American, 1901-1958)
Woman in Red, Portrait of Rigmor Nielsen. Dedicated and signed "TO RIGMOR/A. MORANG" l.c. Oil on academy board, 23 7/8 x 17 3/4 in., framed. Condition: Scattered paint losses, wear to the edges of the academy board with losses to the corners, surface grime.
Provenance: From the artist to Rigmor Nielsen, by descent to the current owner.
N.B. Rigmor Nielsen was the aunt of the consignor and a personal friend of Alfred Morang and of the novelist and short story writer Erskine Caldwell. It is said that Caldwell wrote her into his book, God's Little Acre. Caldwell shared some of the proceeds from the publishing of God's Little Acre with Morang, making it possible for Morang to move from Maine to Santa Fe in 1938. Letters between Caldwell and Morang are held in the collection of the Houghton Library at Harvard University.
