Carved Naval Yerba Buena Presentation Box, c. 1846, ornately carved box with the fort at Yerba Buena on the lid, inside is a silver plaque engraved "This Box/was presented to John Berrien Montgomery/the Commander United/Sates Navy on July 9th 1846./Carved in the Chinese manner/it depicts the Old Fort at/Yerba Buena/Given in Memory/of Him," with foliate designs carved around the edge and bottom, dia. 117 mm.
Provenance: The collection of Nicholas A. Penachio.
Note: Yerba Buena was captured by U.S. naval forces under the command of John B. Montgomery on July 9, 1846.
