Description:

Lilian Westcott Hale (American, 1881-1963)

Lady with Garlands
Signed and dated "Lilian/Westcott/Hale/1910" in two places l.r., titled on a label from Mann Galleries, Miami, affixed to the backing, inscribed "Hirschl & Adler 4993" l.l. on the reverse, inscribed "APG 12003" u.r. on the reverse.
Pencil and charcoal on paper with Strathmore Drawing Board blindstamp l.r., 14 5/8 x 23 1/8 in. (37.1 x 58.7 cm), framed.
Condition: Sheet taped to window mat at upper edge on the reverse, pinholes to corners, small losses and nicks to corners and edges, mat burn, toning, staining, foxing.
Estimate $2,000-3,000

Framed dimensions: 23 1/2 x 32 in.

The mat burn from the current mat is near the edges of the sheet. There is also a paler burn from a previous oval-shaped mat, and the foxing is primarily surrounding the area of the oval mat burn. The second signature is possibly to accommodate the previous oval mat. A possible water stain is evident on the reverse.

Provenance: Purchased at Mann Gallery, Miami, Florida, on July 28, 1973, by the current owner.
