Description:
Melbourne H. Hardwick (American, 1857-1916)
Quiet New England Village and Cove
Signed "Melbourne H. Hardwick." l.l., identified on a label from John H. Surovek Fine Arts, Palm Beach, Florida, affixed to the back of the frame.
Oil on canvas, 23 1/4 x 27 1/4 in. (58.8 x 69.3 cm),framed.
Condition: Canvas rippling.
Estimate $3,000-5,000
Very minor craquelure in the impasto in the church steeple, a faint incised line that seems original to the work (does not appear to be an abrasion since there is no paint loss) located in the upper right quadrant to the right of the church steeple, visible in raking light where it crosses the horizontal brush work of the sky; faint stretcher bar mark at upper center edge. Rippling of the canvas is most pronounced in the u.r. corner, and the work would benefit from re-keying or re-stretching.
Framed dimensions are 30 5/8 x 34 3/4 in.
