Black-painted Sack-back Windsor Chair, New York City, c. 1785-90, with bold vase and ring turnings, old repaint, ht. 36 1/2, seat ht. 16 1/2 in.
Provenance: The Janie & Peter Gross Collection.
Literature: Charles Santore, Windsor Style in America, Volume II, p. 101, pl. 87. According to Santore, this chair may be one of a pair, the other of which was offered at Skinner, sale 2961B, November 19, 2016, as Lot 244.
Note: Old jelly label affixed to the underside of the seat reads: "Charles Ewing bought this chair from Harvey Smith Mt. Holly in 1920s."
